2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Change Follows Lukewarm Reception

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified team members about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a distinct vision.

Ismailer stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a more distinct vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of the team. Following some time of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter field is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep observing the evolution of the game in the months to come.

David

Background of the New Leader

The appointee presently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that shift every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or go big, gamble everything, and hope your group can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."

The game lacks an official launch window or consoles, but fans can expect additional details as creation progresses.
