A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
