Donald Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have intensified the tone of their war of words, increasing strains in their relations following American military units struck Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He runs cocaine mills and cocaine factories and his time is running out," Trump remarked.
Escalating Tensions and Allegations
Addressing journalists on Sunday, the US president hinted at analogous armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and distributing it to America."
While Colombia is the leading producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the trade.
A Strained Partnership
This nation was historically a key ally of the United States in the struggle against narcotics trade and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, but relations have worsened significantly since Trump assumed the presidency.
Colombia’s narcotics trade is predominantly run by illegal armed groups like one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom laid down arms following a historic peace agreement.
The President's Defiant Rebuttal
In response to a query if armed intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."
The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, rejected the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he affirmed.
"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a message.
"Should American forces attack peasants, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain me, which a large part of Colombians loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the populace," he admonished.
From Insurgent to Statesman
He passed some years as a young man as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed he did not participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the presidency.
"I swore to never again hold a weapon again ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he said.
Reinforced Protection along with Broad Opposition
The Colombian defence minister reported that the national leader's protection team had been reinforced.
A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump, but voices from across the political spectrum have rejected the possibility of American military action targeting Colombia.
Diplomatic and Financial Sanctions
American authorities revoked his travel authorization following he urged American soldiers to refuse orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his wife and several close collaborators.
Simultaneously the US was building up its forces in the region and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out operations on boats off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
