Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
