Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
