Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Team to Face India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a shock call-up.

Recent Form Result in Exclusion

Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI team following scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has played 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia search for a answer to their batting top-order problems.

Bowling Additions and Fitness Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
