We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The plot commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
